The American Folklife Center, created by Congress in 1976, incorporates
the Library's massive Archive of Folk Culture (complete with reference
reading room) and sponsors concerts, conferences, publications and other
activities. This site is one of the better sites out there for folklife
resources. It not only provides online access to several of the Archives'
collections (and links to other Library collections), but also provides
many links to scholarly programs, societies, archives and organizations
through the U.S. and abroad.

This is the website for the national scholarly society devoted to folklore.
It includes information on events and conferences, a membership directory,
a listing of University-based graduate programs in Folklore, and links
to other relevant sites. Their Opportunities in Folklore page is the most
comprehensive listing in the field for employment opportunities, conference
listings and fellowship announcements.

This site provides information on the Center's activities, including the
Smithsonian Folklife Festival, Smithsonian Folkways Recordings, educational
materials developed for teachers, symposia, films and recent issues of
their newsletter Talk Story. Includes a database that allows you to search
the entire Folkways catalog. In their Resources section, check out their
Archives and Other Resources page, which contains many links to other
folklife archives, databases, organizations and music-related online resources.

The National Council for the Traditional Arts (NCTA) is the nation's oldest
private non-profit presenting organization that deals with folk, ethnic
and tribal arts. Their site provides information on all past and current
activities (which include festivals, tours, concerts, recordings and other
media programs). Their links list is small but eclectic and includes several
independent record labels that specialize in various forms of traditional
music.

The National Task Force on Folk Arts in Education, under the sponsorship
of City Lore, is a national advocacy network of folklorists, traditional
artists and other cultural specialists, working for inclusion of folk
and traditional culture in the nation's education. Services include their
C.A.R.T.S website (Cultural Arts Resources for Teachers and Students),
which provides online and national and regional resources for folklife
and education, national listings for teachers workshops, interactive activity
and more.

Supported by the National Endowment for the Arts, TAPNET is a virtual
one-stop information site for links to folk arts-related activity at NEA,
state and local programs, media-related programs, museums, archives, etc.
Their page, American Folklorist Public Directory, contains a fairly thorough
address listing for folklorists engaged in folklife public programming
nationwide.

Arts Agencies, is a national organization that advocates for increased
arts funding and community involvement in the arts. Their site provides
information on their funding programs, advocacy activities, research and
publications.

Founded in 1994, the Center for Arts and Culture is
a research-based organization that promotes informed debate about arts
and culture in American society and strengthens the nation's process of
cultural policy making. The site lists their cultural policy-related activities,
conferences and publications, and provides information, links, and resource
listings in seven areas: access and equity, culture in communities, education
and the creative work force, globalization, investment in culture and
creativity, creativity and the law, and heritage and preservation. They
also host a weekly listserv, providing a listing of articles on arts and
culture from newspapers and magazines around the country.

Assembly of State Arts Agencies

NASAA is the membership organization of the nation's state and jurisdictional
arts agencies. They conduct planning, technical assistance and data and
research services on behalf of their membership and work closely with
the National Endowment for the Arts. Their site provides links to all
state arts agencies and gives an overview of state arts agency activity.

NYFA Interactive is a national information resource clearinghouse for
artists and arts organizations. Though it is somewhat weak in folk arts
and culture listings, the website has extensive listings for funding,
jobs, service organizations and other resources (including state arts
agencies, museums, presenters, arts centers, etc.). It has weekly features
and news listings that are updated regularly.
